How to Share a PDF to Facebook

The other day, one of the Extension educators asked me how to save a PDF to Facebook. She was planning to convert the PDF to JPG files and upload those. However, there are many other ways to get a PDF to Facebook. Most importantly, the PDF must be located on the Web. Here are the methods I am going to demonstrate:

Each of the sites listed above allows you to upload and share a file to the public.

We are beginning to use WordPress more and more in our operations, and WordPress is a good place to place files to be shared with others. Here are the steps:

  1. Log into your WordPress Admin Site.
  2. Click on Media from the left hand menu.
  3. Click on Add New.
  4. Find and upload your PDF file.
  5. Click on the Edit link next to your uploaded file.
  6. You now have three possible links to copy and subsequently paste into Facebook. See image below.
  7. Paste your link to the PDF in Facebook.

Google Drive

Google Drive is a great resource where you can upload files to be shared with others. All Extension educators have the ability to create an account. That account has an associated Google Drive account.  Here are the steps to share a PDF from Google Drive:

  1. Log into your Google Drive account.
  2. Click on the Upload button and then Files. Select your PDF for upload.
  3. Open your PDF file from Google Drive.
  4. Select the Share button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Under Who has access, click the Change link.
  6. Select the option Public on the Web, and then click on the Save button.
  7. Copy the Link to share.
  8. Paste your link to the PDF in Facebook.

Dropbox conveniently has a folder called “Public” and this folder can be used to share files publicly. Here is how you share a file from the Dropbox public folder (I will be doing this from the Web version of Dropbox):

  1. Log into and navigate to the Public folder.
  2. Upload your PDF file to the Public folder.
  3. Ensure your new file is highlighted by clicking on the bar to the right of the file name.
  4. Click on the Copy public link link.
  5. Click on the Copy to Clipboard button.
  6. Paste your link to the PDF in Facebook.

Evernote is another way you can share a file to Facebook. Evernote actually provides an option to do exactly that. Here are the easy steps to share a PDF from Evernote to Facebook:

  1. Log into Evernote and start a New Note.
  2. Click on the add attachment button and upload your PDF.
  3. Right click on the file name from the list, select Share, and then select Post to Facebook.
  4. Add a comment, and select the Share button.

Scribd is another great place to upload and share PDF files. Scribd is useful if you have a lot of PDF documents for which you want to get public exposure. Here is how to use Scribd:

  1. Log into Scribd and select the Upload button at the top of every page.
  2. Upload your file. You will also have to fill in a title, description, tags, and category for the file.
  3. Navigate to your newly uploaded file.
  4. Click on the Link button.
  5. Copy URL provided.
  6. Paste your link to the PDF in Facebook.

Ordinary Website

The last method I will share is by placing the PDF file on a Website and sharing the URL. Naturally, you will have to have permissions to upload files to a Website. Here are the steps:

  1. With an FTP client or other process that you normally use, upload the PDF to your Website.
  2. In a Web browser, navigate to the PDF file.  The URL should look something like this:
  3. Copy the URL from the browser address bar and paste your link to the PDF in Facebook.

Additional Notes

Note: There were times when I pasted a link in Facebook and it would not work. Simply refresh Facebook and try again. In the end, every link worked.
