Show Off Your Team With Instagram and Twitter Images

Yesterday, I launched an event to showcase the cool things our University of Wyoming Extension employees were doing during the month of October. Here are the details:

For our first Instagram assignment: UWyo Extension, October 2014 (#UWyoExtOct2014)
Show us what you do in support of University of Wyoming Extension on Instagram @uwcesedtech #UWyoExtOct2014. Take the picture, get all the info — name, position, and location — put it all in the caption, and tag it @uwcesedtech #UWyoExtOct2014

Please tag photos with those tags on Instagram or Twitter between now and October 31. We will look through and pick photos to be featured. Remember, you don’t have to be a professional photographer to participate. This is your chance to share what you do!

REMINDER:
-Have fun but also professionally reflect the University of Wyoming Extension.
-Do not post personal information about other people, such as full name, location, address, phone number, etc.
-Share your University of Wyoming Extension story with us and have fun!

When I sent this message out, I fully realized that not everyone knew how to do this. Naturally, someone called me out for more details.

Instagram

Instagram is a photo/video social media site. Individuals can capture a photo or video, add a filter, and share the results on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. Instagram is intended to be used from a mobile device, e.g., smartphone, iPad, phone with a Web browser, etc. However, you can also check into Instagram with a computer.

To begin using Instagram, you would download the Instagram application to your smartphone and create an account. Ideally, you would want to use the same username that you use for your Twitter account. Unfortunately, I was not able to do that for my account.

Once you have the application loaded, start it up. From the main page, select the center button on the bottom of the screen.

To take a picture, press the blue circle at the bottom center of the screen. (Sorry my pictures are not of the same subject). There are other options on this screen such turning on and off the thirds grid, flipping the camera from front to selfie, and turning on the flash. You can also access the video mode.

Once the photo is taken, you can enhance it with a theme or frame. You can also adjust contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc. as well as apply other effects such as tilt-shift.

Finally, add a caption and decide where you want to send it. If you are following others on Instagram, you can tag them in your photos as well as geotag the photo.

Instagram is a great tool to capture and share events as they are happening.

Twitter

Twitter is another option for capturing and sending out images as you take them. You can either share images from your computer or from your phone’s Twitter application. Here are the steps for each:

From Computer

With a Web browser go to https://twitter.com/. Select the Compose button from the upper right corner of the screen.

Next, select the camera (add photo) button from the lower right portion of the dialog box. This will bring up a file explorer, simply search for and select the photo you want to use.

Finally, insert your caption and send off the Tweet.

It is also possible to tag individuals in the photo as well as add more than one photo to a Tweet.

From Your Phone

Naturally, you will need the Twitter application loaded on your phone. Open the application and select the camera button from the bottom of the screen. It is also possible to access photos from your camera’s photo gallery.
