August 2018 reading list
(Last Updated On: )

Well, it looks like I need to step it up in order to meet my 2018 goal. It seems I bit off a little more than I could chew with my July 2018 book selection. The Business Podcasting Bible slowed me down, and I just started The Rise of Theodore RooseveltThe Rise of Theodore Roosevelt is really good but it is 900 pages long. But I am confident I will be able to finish it as well as four other books I have selected for August. How are you do? Is summer a time for you to read? Or do summer activities keep you from reading? Come and check out my reading list and read along with me.

This month I am prepping for some courses I am teaching so one of the books is a book that I am assigning for one of the classes. The other books are related to helping my business, Tubarks Consulting and one book that focuses on some of the men from Band of Brothers.

Here is what is on my reading list for August 2018:

Planning Programs for Adult Learners: A Practical Guide by Rosemary S Caffarella

I will be using this book for the fall term. It is a graduate level course on program planning and evaluation. The book is rather hefty. I want to make sure I have read it before the class has started.

When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel Pink

I learned about Daniel Pink’s latest book while listening to a podcast. I had previously read Pink’s book, Drive and really enjoyed it. I like how Pink writes and presents information. What he presents is impactful.

Via Amazon:

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don’t know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when” decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.

Timing, it’s often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?

In When, Pink distills cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating, readable narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give readers compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged lives.

We Who Are Alive and Remain: Untold Stories from the Band of Brothers by Marcus Brotherton

This is another book helping me better understand the men of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 10st Airborne Infantry Division. This is the third book I have read authored by Brotherton. The first being Shifty’s War: The Authorized Biography of Sergeant Darrell “Shifty” Powers, the Legendary Sharpshooter From the Band of Brothers. and the second was A Company of Heroes: Personal Memories About the Real Band of Brothers and the Legacy They Left UsI have really enjoyed how he writes.

Via Amazon:

The national bestselling collection of untold stories from World War 2’s legendary Band of Brothers. With candid, personal accounts of training, combat, triumph, and loss, the men of Easy Company let you know what it was really like.

The Army had decided to try something different. A selected division would receive boot camp and paratrooper training in one place and time. The result, they hoped, would be a group of men unparalleled in their cohesiveness; a force of heroic spirit and deadly efficiency.

After almost two years of hard training, the men of Easy Company parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and, later, Operation Market Garden. They fought their way through Belgium, France, and Germany, survived overwhelming odds, liberated concentration camps, and drank a victory toast in April of 1945 at Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest hideout in the Alps.

Here are stories of war, sacrifice, and courage as seen by one of the most revered combat units in military history. In We Who Are Alive and Remain, these men recount the horrors and the victories, the bonds they made, the tears and blood they shed…and the brothers they lost.
