It’s the season when students are asking for extra credit and faculty are offering extra credit. I am personally not a fan of extra credit, and I will explain why. Are you giving extra credit? Should you?

Why would you want to give students extra assignments when they cannot complete the regular assignments? I think you can create your course in such a manner that students will not need extra credit. I am not alone in this opinion.
Rather than have students do additional assignments, have them improve upon the assignments they have already completed.
This episode will examine the pros and cons of extra credit and strategies for avoiding it altogether.
