Book Review: Ultimate Guide to Email Marketing for Business
(Last Updated On: )

All the podcasters that I listen to stress the importance of having an email list and using it to market your business. While I understand the importance, I struggle to put it into practice. This is the primary reason why I picked up Susan Gunelius’ book, Ultimate Guide to Email Marketing for Business. If you are new to email marketing, this book is a great primer. I would definitely recommend this book to other small business owners for no other reason than to familiarize yourself with the concepts of email marketing.

Gunelius covers her topic in 226 pages spread over thirteen chapters and a resource-rich appendix. The chapters include:

  • The Evolution of Email Marketing
  • The Marketing Funnel
  • Know the Laws and Deliverability Rules
  • Choose Your Tools
  • Types of Email Marketing Funnels
  • Growing Your List
  • Creating a Lead Magnet
  • Developing an Email Marketing Conversion Funnel
  • List Segmentation
  • Writing and Email Message
  • Autoresponder Messages
  • Measuring Performance
  • Handy Resources and Swipe Files

The use of email is not going away. It is a very effective way to market your business if you do it right. Your email list is one of your most important business assets. Gunelius did a great job discussing the necessary elements for creating, building, and using an email list.

Using clear straightforward language, Gunelius clearly explained what elements are needed to set up an effective email marketing campaign. She did not highlight a specific application but focused on principles that will work with different email service providers.

Most of the content she shared, I was already familiar with. Gunelius stressed the importance of using an email service provider (ESP) rather than sending messages from your email account. An ESP will allow you to personalize messages, send to segmented audiences, and provide metrics on open rates.

Gunelius also focused on marketing funnels and how email fits into the picture. She shared many tips for moving clients through the different parts of the funnel. She addressed funnels for acquiring, nurturing, selling, and renurturing customers.

Another part of the book that really resonated with me focused on list segmentation. I now need to see how I can easily segment lists that I have. List segmentation allows you to send specific email messages to parts of your list.

This was a clearly written book with ample ideas on how to put email marketing into practice. While she did not focus on a specific ESP, one could take what she provided and research an ESP to see how it could be done. She shared the right information in order to ask intelligent questions. The book also had many relevant images that helped to add clarity to the topic.

At the end of the book, Gunelius provided a thorough resource list. The list contained downloadable resources that she created and shared but also lists of ESPs, landing pages, image galleries, Opt-in form tools, and much more. She also shared a chapter full of email swipe files to help get you started.

I am very pleased with what I learned while reading the Ultimate Guide to Email Marketing for Business. If you are responsible for generating leads for your company, you will want to read this book because it will be imperative that you develop an email list and put it to work for your company. This book at a minimum will help you become smarter about email marketing.
