August 2019 Reading List
(Last Updated On: )

July was a great month for reading. I was able to sneak in a fifth book for the month and get started on my August reading list. I am kind of surprised about the number of pages I knocked out considering I was doing quite a bit of traveling. Knowing that I was traveling, I set aside time specifically for reading. Now I have to catch up on writing my reviews. Hopefully, August will be as productive. This is what I have planned for August.

My August reading is split between inspiration, business, and education. One of the faculty at work wrote a book for educators and I am going to check it out. This month I will be taking a deep dive into the 80/20 principle also known as the Pareto Principles.  I will also be taking a closer look at email marketing.

Here is what is on my reading list for August 2019:

The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Achieving More with Less by Richard Koch

This is one of two books I will be reading to get a better understanding of the 80/20 principle. I cracked the book open today. So far, I am enjoying it.

Via Amazon:

Be more effective with less effort by learning how to identify and leverage the 80/20 principle: that 80 percent of all our results in business and in life stem from a mere 20 percent of our efforts.

The 80/20 principle is one of the great secrets of highly effective people and organizations.

Did you know, for example, that 20 percent of customers account for 80 percent of revenues? That 20 percent of our time accounts for 80 percent of the work we accomplish? The 80/20 Principle shows how we can achieve much more with much less effort, time, and resources, simply by identifying and focusing our efforts on the 20 percent that really counts. Although the 80/20 principle has long influenced today’s business world, author Richard Koch reveals how the principle works and shows how we can use it in a systematic and practical way to vastly increase our effectiveness, and improve our careers and our companies.

The unspoken corollary to the 80/20 principle is that little of what we spend our time on actually counts. But by concentrating on those things that do, we can unlock the enormous potential of the magic 20 percent, and transform our effectiveness in our jobs, our careers, our businesses, and our lives.

80/20 Sales and Marketing: The Definitive Guide to Working Less and Making More by Perry Marshall

This is the second book that I will be reading on my deep dive into the 80/20 principle.

Via Amazon:

80/20 = Law of Nature

The 80/20 Principle is an inviolable law of nature, which makes it the #1 organizing principle of every business. Perry shows how to laser focus the 80/20 Principle in outsourcing, hiring, publicity, controversy, market research, lead generation, and web traffic; online, offline and social media. He also shows you how to glean huge insights from tiny clues, not only in your own business but from competitors.

Classroom Advice for New Teachers: A Proactive Approach for Meeting the Daily Challenges of the Profession by Jeff Julian

Jeff Julian is one of the faculty who teaches at the college I work at. I just learned he wrote a book. It looked interesting so I picked up a copy to give it a review.

Via Amazon:

This book offers new teachers a proactive approach to the entire spectrum of the profession, from making the decision to become a teacher, through applying, interviewing, setting up a classroom, accessing curriculum, creating lesson plans and a grade book, presenting material effectively, creating a positive learning environment based on empathy and respect, connecting with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents, preventing cheating and bullying, maintaining order, and using educational technology, all the way to avoiding late-career burnout.

Ultimate Guide to Email Marketing for Business by Susan Gunelius

I use email for work and my business. I use an email service provider to deliver email courses. Additionally, I also send out a regular newsletter. But this is an area I am very weak in. I am hoping that this book can help me do a better job.

Via Amazon:

With more than 2.6 million email messages sent every second, it’s becoming harder to stand out in inboxes―not to mention in a sea of spam, which accounts for 67 percent of those emails. Marketing and strategic branding expert Susan Gunelius gives you the tools you need to grow your list of email subscribers, keep them engaged, and turn them into lifelong customers.

By focusing on building a strong foundation first, you’ll learn how to develop a comprehensive email marketing program designed to evolve with your business. Then, Gunelius shows you how to convert subscribers into buying customers and vocal brand advocates with the techniques that marketing professionals use to build their businesses and increase their revenue using email. You’ll learn how to:

  • Use free content to encourage people to subscribe to your email list
  • Develop conversion funnels that drive people to buy from you or sign up for your webinars
  • Save time and keep subscribers engaged with your brand with email automation
  • Boost conversions with list segmentation techniques designed to get the right message to the right people at the right time
  • Test your messages and analyze your performance using key metrics to improve your results
  • Win back customers with automation and personalization strategies designed to build a one-on-one relationship with your audience
  • Understand the laws and deliverability rules you must follow and tools to help you along the way

That’s it for this month — I want to hear what good books YOU’VE read lately! Please share in the comments below.

If you missed previous months in 2019, you can still check them out:
