May 2019 Reading List

(Last Updated On: January 30, 2022)

I can’t believe that May is already here! I am still catching up from April but I am getting closer to being on track. In a week and a half, the class I am teaching will be done so I will get a little extra time to myself. That time will be spent mowing the lawn (if it ever dries out), writing, and reading. I am looking forward to some me time.  This is what I have planned for May.

My May reading will focus mostly on tweaking my business acumen. But I will also sneak in a work of fiction for good measure. Since I am still catching up on my April reading, it will be a busy reading month. I am taking another break from my reading shelf and diving into four new books. The business-related books are on Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and a content strategy. The fiction piece is about a Dutch boat captain during WWII. I am looking forward to all of them.

Here is what is on my reading list for May 2019:

The Boat Runner

The Boat Runner: A Novel by Devin Murphy

I picked up this book at the Off the Beaten Path bookstore in Lakewood. The concept of the book interested me because my grandfather was a canal boat captain during WWII. I wanted to know more about this world during this period of time.

Via Amazon:

The Boat Runner tells the little-known story of the young Dutch boys who were thrown into the Nazi campaign, as well as the brave boatmen who risked everything to give Jewish refugees safe passage. Through one boy’s harrowing talk of personal redemption, we learn the power of stories and voices to bring light to our darkest days.

Master Content Strategy: How to Maximize Your Reach and Boost Your Bottom Line Every Time You Hit Publish by Pamela Wilson

I had an opportunity to listen to Pamela Wilson talk about her approach to creating and scheduling content for businesses on one of the podcast episodes that I listen to. I knew I had to learn more.

Via Amazon:

A masterclass in content marketing strategy for content creators at every stage of the journey — written by a business owner, marketing consultant, and leading authority on the subject.

Whether you’re starting out or are managing a vast archive of content, this book delivers a content strategy that will maximize your results.

Thoughtful content marketing delivers — traffic, attention, and customers.

But too often, content creators just churn out piece after piece, with no thought to how everything fits together.

The result is scattered, confusing, ineffective content marketing.

It’s a complete waste of time!

Your content strategy can and should change depending on the stage of growth you’re in.
With Master Content Strategy, Pamela Wilson delivers an approach that honors your website’s lifecycle and adapts to help you grow your skills as you grow your audience.

This approach works for both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) content creation — and for bloggers, podcasters, and vloggers alike.

Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords: How to Access 100 Million People in 10 Minutes (Ultimate Series) by Perry Marshall, Mike Rhodes, and Bryan Todd

One of the areas I wanted to learn more about was Google Ads. If one does not master how to do advertising on Google, Facebook, or one of the other platforms, you could lose a lot of money. I spend enough without having to lose it.

Via Amazon:

Covering the latest breaking news in Google AdWords, the fifth edition introduces revised, expanded and new chapters covering Enhanced Campaigns, Google AdWord’s Express, Google’s Product Listing Ads, and the introduction to Google’s Universal Analytics. Nuances in Big Data advertising are also revealed and expanded sections and necessary updates have been added throughout.

Updates specific to this edition include:

  • Powerful bidding strategies using remarketing lists for search ads
  • New ad extension features
  • Automation capabilities using AdWords scripts
  • Bonus Online Content that includes links to dozens of resources and tutorials covering: registering a domain name, setting up a website, selecting an email service, choosing a shopping cart service, finding products to sell, and starting up a Google AdWords account

Readers are given the latest information paired with current screenshots, fresh examples, and new techniques. Coached by AdWords experts Perry Marshall, Mike Rhodes, and Bryan Todd advertisers learn how to build an aggressive, streamlined AdWords campaign proven to increase their search engine visibility, consistently capture clicks, double their website traffic, and increase their sales. Whether a current advertiser or new to AdWords, this guide is a necessary handbook.

Right now, I am working with a client on their Facebook ads campaign. It is always good to have a good reference on hand to help quickly put things in motion. I am a fan of Andrea Vahl and what she has to share about Facebook ads. It only made sense to read her book.
