In my quest to learn more about podcasting, I picked up the book 100 Great Podcasting Tips: From 100 Great Podcasters. This book is exactly what it sounds like it is. It is a survey of a number of successful podcasters—many of them, I personally listen to. They share their advice on what one needs to do to start a podcast.
This was one of those books that you could read in a single sitting. It is 89 pages long and a very quick read. The book began with a chapter about different aspects of podcasting and followed up with the history of podcasting. Next, the author Gary Leland shared the reasons to start a podcast. Towards the end of the book, he shared a number of additional resources to include podcast directories, podsafe music, podcasting tools, podcasts about podcasting, and his resources.
The majority of the book focused on 100 tips for podcasting shared by very accomplished podcasters. Here are some of the things that I took away from this book:
- Just start!
- Podcasting success takes time. One needs to be patient.
- Rather than spend time trying to become perfect in your first podcast episode, it’s more important to release the episode.
- It is important to treat your podcast as a business. This means being consistent and professional.
- Be yourself.
- Continue to work on building an audience and gather subscribers to your podcast.
- If possible work ahead. Create a backlog of shows so you are prepared in case of emergency.
- Don’t worry about perfection. Try to minimize post-production time. Just produce content and work on getting better every episode.
- Podcast about something that you enjoy.
- Batch your work.
- Keep on learning.
- Know what your overall message is.
- Do not build on rented land. Make sure that you own your domain and your email list.
- Listen to your own work so you can continually improve.
- Ensure that you smile when you’re talking.
- Keep niching in.
- It doesn’t necessarily matter what equipment you’re using to get started as long as it sounds good. You can always improve your equipment as you become more established.
- Keep your episodes as short as necessary.
Overall, the key to getting a podcast up and going is to just do it. I personally think I’ve been in my head too much. I need to just start. I have been waiting for a specific event to take place. Based on the results of the event, one way or another, I will get this podcast going in 2019. Heck, I may just start doing it.
The podcasters emphasized in 100 Great Podcasting Tips: From 100 Great Podcasters that you need to find something that you’re passionate about. It should be something that others may find interesting but that’s not necessary. You can build up your equipment later but for now, just begin.
