Book Review: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
(Last Updated On: February 8, 2020)

Well, I just completed the third book required for the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge task of reading three books by the same author. The book I chose was JK Rowling’s, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third in the Harry Potter series. As with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, this book was well written and quite entertaining.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is 435 pages long and spread across twenty-two chapters. Each book has been growing in page length. I am confident that by the time I get to the last book, I will be reading the equivalent of War and Peace.

This particular book seemed darker and more serious than the other books. I especially liked how Rowling developed Hermione’s character as she dealt with stress while multitasking.

I am most fascinated with how Rowling manages to keep all the details and subplots in order. Not only is she doing it for this book, but she is managing all these details across a series of books. I would love to see her writing process.

As with the other books, I immediately watched the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie. I have to say that the movie paled in comparison to the book. While I understand that the movie had a time constraint, I felt they skipped or underrepresented key elements of the book. For example, the stress Hermione was feeling was not adequately reflected in the film. Also, the Firebolt was mentioned in chapter eleven of the book and played an important role in the book, especially about the relationship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. But it was only mentioned at the very end of the film. Finally, Crookshanks was also noticeably missing, another key connector in the book.

While reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban finished the requirements for the task, I am confident that I will read the rest of the series in time. It has been an enjoyable series so far. I can see why the series became a bestseller.
