Well, I finally caught up to the hype and read my first Harry Potter book. Even though I have watched all the movies, I was quite entertained by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone*. I was able to quickly see why it became a bestseller. It was easy to read and understand but it also kept moving a fair clip.

If you have not read it, I would encourage you to do so. It is a rather quick read with lots of visual detail. I was immediately impressed with the descriptive narrative that Rowling included in the book.

The book is 309 pages long and spans 17 chapters, although, it did not feel as it had this many pages. Over a few reading sessions, I enjoyed picking up the book to see what Harry would run into next. He always seemed to find himself in trouble and yet managed to find a solution or have one presented to him.

I selected this particular book to read because of Modern Mrs. Darcy’s reading challenge. I was curious to see if the Harry Potter books were as good as everyone said. Since this is part of a larger challenge, I look forward to reading a couple more of Rowling’s books.

Another reason, I chose this book was because it was fiction. Lately, I have been doing a lot of reading about writing fiction. I was curious to see how this gifted writer crafted her scenes, characters, dialogue, and her world.

Although I had watched Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as a movie, I watched it again immediately after finishing the book. I was surprised to see some key pieces of the book left out of the film such as the opening pages with the Dursleys and the parts of the multi-part puzzle in the last major scene.

Overall, I enjoyed my lighthearted break reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I found the book to be quite entertaining. If you have not yet had an opportunity to read from this series, I would encourage you to give it a chance. I was drawn in from the first page.
