But I was saved by a healing potion and ventured on. Let me explain. I have always been looking at different programs to help me stay on track and complete my to-do list. I just found a new program called HabitRPG. This program combines my desire to complete tasks and achieve goals with my love of playing games; I’m having a lot of fun getting things done.
I’m not sure exactly where I discovered HabitRPG, but I am finding myself using this program constantly. Have it loaded on my phone, iPad, and web browser. HabitRPG is a role-playing game and to win you need to complete your to-dos, daily tasks, and habits that you have added to the program.
Each of each of the tasks can help or hinder you depending upon the task. Let’s explore this program in a little more depth.
At the top of the screen, you have a little avatar. You can design this avatar by deciding upon hair color, the build, and other features.
As you play the game you earn money which lets you buy equipment with which you can outfit your avatar. Next to your avatar there is a health bar. This health bar will decrease for each daily task you did not complete as well as any negative habits. That was my problem with the parties I attended. Because I was attending the parties, I did not complete some of my daily tasks resulting in my health bar reducing to virtually zero.
Below the health bar is the experience bar. As you level up, the amount of experience points needed increases. You have a goal to achieve X amount of experience points in order to get to the next level. When you level up, your health bar resets. You gather experience points by completing habits, dailies, and to-dos. The difficulty of these tasks dictates how many experience points you receive.
It is interesting to note that resetting your health bar requires more and more experience points as you continue to level up.
The main part of the screen is separated into four areas: habits, dailies, to do’s, and rewards.
In the habits column, you can add tasks that you want to develop over time. Habits I have added to my list include: completing an extra walk during the day, reducing the amount of junk food I eat, losing weight, stretching, drinking more water, etc.
When you add a habit you can select different parameters, for example, you can choose which time of the day you want to limit it to. You can decide whether you will gain experience points or lose health points, for example, if I gain weight, I lose health points. You can also set the difficulty of the habit.
If you do not complete your habits, you do not lose any health points; however, you will lose them with dailies.
Dailies are processes that you want to complete each and every day. The more I read about productivity and becoming successful, the more I realize it is based upon processes. Having daily processes or routines will help you achieve your goals.
One of the recent books that I finish reading is called The 5 A.M. Miracle: Dominate Your Day Before Breakfast*. This book focuses on a process of getting up early and then doing things that will help you achieve your ultimate goals. Because of this book, I have set one of my dailies to be getting up at 5:30 in the morning. This is followed by going out for a walk. When I get back and finish showering, I weigh myself as another daily. The results of my weigh in determines if I gain or lose points for my habit.
I also have other dailies such as completing sanshin no kata, cleaning out my email, running my Evernote dailies, reading a book, and completing my ONE things. I subscribe to the idea of the ONE thing and try to get one thing done for Civil Air Patrol, my business, and for work.
Dailies also have parameters. You don’t have to set a daily for every single day; perhaps, you want to do it Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Some tasks don’t happen on the weekends or happen during a specific part of the day. You can make these adjustments.
You can also change the difficulty level of each of these tasks, which will earn you a different amount of points.
In the to-do column, this is where you put those items that you are not planning to repeat more than once. For example, I’m working on a course and when I finish that course nothing more needs to be done. Therefore, it’s not a daily and it’s not a new habit. It is just something that I need to do. I can put it on my to-do list and check it off as it is finished.
If you do not take care of your to-do’s in a timely manner, they lose experience points over time.
The last column on the page has to do with rewards and based on the money that you earn for completing your tasks. Once you “earn” enough money, you can then go out and purchase different items. For example, you can purchase armor and weapons to outfit your avatar. Most importantly, you can buy health potions to keep you alive when life gets in the way and you are not able to get your tasks done.
As you play the game, you will pick up various items. Like other role playing games, you have the ability to sell and buy items. Also, you have quests that you can opt in and you can own pets and mounts. All of these elements just makes the daily grind a little more fun.
This program also has social elements such as a tavern where you can communicate with other users. You can create your own party where you can invite friends to participate and share some common quests.
They also have what are called guilds. This is where common groups of people get together, for example, there is a scholar’s guild, a guild for artists, and a gamer’s guild. There’s a guild for newbies where someone new to the game can ask questions. In these guilds, you can participate in various challenges and take them on as personal habits, dailies, or to-dos.
Well, that’s a little bit about the program HabitRPG. So far, I am finding it enjoyable and it’s helping me to knock out some tasks.
