If you’ve ever wondered why ChatGPT sometimes gets personal details wrong—or keeps calling you by the wrong name—you’re not alone. As someone who works with both faculty and businesses to demonstrate how to use ChatGPT effectively, I’ve had my fair share of experiences with the tool’s evolving memory feature. And while it’s a powerful asset, it does require some housekeeping to keep it aligned with your needs.
Let me walk you through how memory in ChatGPT works, where things can go sideways, and how you can take back control.
What Is Memory in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT’s memory feature allows it to remember useful information you’ve shared across conversations. This includes:
- Your name or pronouns
- Topics you frequently discuss
- Your preferences or goals
This feature can be beneficial for creating more personalized interactions, especially if you’re building out long-term projects or routines with ChatGPT.
But here’s the kicker: if you’ve been running experiments or trying out different examples—as I often do in training sessions—those examples can start leaking into your personal work.
When ChatGPT Gets It Wrong
Here’s a personal story: ChatGPT started referring to me as Jonas. Where did it get that from? No idea. But it stuck—and that’s when I knew I had to dive deeper into how memory works and how to manage it.
Apparently, ChatGPT had saved previous bits of information from example conversations I’d run during training demos. It confused those with my actual details. So now, before I start a new project or consult with clients, I ensure my memory is cleaned up and aligned with what I want to know.
How to Manage ChatGPT’s Memory
If you’re using ChatGPT Plus (which I do), here’s how you can take control:
✅ Turn Memory on or Off
- Click on your name in the upper right corner.
- Go to Settings → Personalization → Memory.
- Toggle it ON or OFF depending on your preference.
If you want a clean slate, turning it off temporarily is a good first step.
✅ View and Edit Saved Memory
In the same Memory menu, click “Manage Memory” to see what ChatGPT has remembered about you. This is where you’ll likely find those stray pieces of information it picked up over time.
For me, I found things like:
- “Jonas” as my name (📝 I’m Stan, not Jonas)
- Interest in wolf-human interaction studies (not my research)
- A goal to become a physical therapist (not mine or any friend’s)
All of that? Deleted.
✅ Remove Irrelevant Conversations
Sometimes, memory isn’t the only thing influencing ChatGPT—it’s the history of your chats. Go through old conversations:
- Group relevant ones into projects (e.g., Civil Air Patrol, consulting gigs)
- Delete those that are no longer helpful
To delete a conversation:
Click the three dots next to the chat > Delete.
Tips for Keeping ChatGPT in Check
Here are a few strategies I recommend, especially for educators and consultants:
- Turn memory off during demonstrations – Prevents experimental inputs from being saved.
- Create project-specific chats – Keeps your conversations organized and prevents cross-contamination.
- Regularly audit your memory settings – Especially after trying new prompts or tools.
- Use clear names for your chats – It makes tracking and managing easier.
What Memory Doesn’t Do
Even with memory ON, ChatGPT does not remember:
- Private data like passwords or credit card numbers
- Anything unless it’s flagged for memory
- Anything in free accounts (memory is only in ChatGPT Plus with GPT-4)
Also, every session has temporary memory, meaning it will remember what you said during that single conversation but forget everything after the session ends—unless memory is on and something is saved.
Wrapping It All Up
Memory in ChatGPT is a double-edged sword. Used well, it personalizes your AI experience. Misused—or left unmanaged—it can muddy your workflows, confuse your identity, and create distractions.
Take time to:
- Review what it remembers.
- Clear what doesn’t belong.
- Organize your chats by project.
With just a bit of maintenance, you can make ChatGPT work smarter.
