Andragogy is the method used to teach adults. Malcolm Knowles put andragogy on the map when he outlined assumptions about adult learners that were different than teaching children. For the greater part of our academic career, we have received instruction designed for teaching children. In college, we are primarily working with adults. Shouldn’t we design our instruction for adults?

Knowles’ assumptions for adult learners note that learners are self-directed, use prior experience for learning, are ready to learn, want to apply new knowledge right away, benefit from problem-based learning and are intrinsically motivated.

In this episode, I am going to focus on andragogy and how it differs from pedagogy. You will also gain guidance for making adjustments to your classroom to make it more adult-friendly.
