How would you like to get more time back in your schedule? Time is a treasured commodity for educators. You can find more time by automating repetitive tasks with text expansion. Let me show you how.

In this episode, I am going to share a wonderful tool called TextExpander. A text expander can convert a shortcode into a substantive piece of text. Here is how it can save you time.

The average person types 36 words per minute. A typical email message has 75-100 words. If you have to type the same message repeatedly, you will spend two to three minutes on each message.

With a text expander, you can reduce this to only one word or code. You will have saved yourself two to three minutes for each message. For ten similar messages, you have already saved 20-30 minutes.

Where this really comes into play is during grading. You will often provide similar or the same feedback to multiple students or multiple times in the same paper. Even though the feedback will be short, it takes a considerable amount of time in the long run. You can speed grading by typing only a single phrase and letting the text expander do the work.
