Books Review: Starting a Business QuickStart Guide
(Last Updated On: )

Earlier last month, I was asked to review Starting a Business QuickStart Guide: The Simplified Beginner’s Guide to Launching a Successful Small Business, Turning Your Vision into Reality, and Achieving Your Entrepreneurial Dream. It sounded like a book I would enjoy and find useful so I accepted. Ken Colwell has put together a really useful book that can help small business owners get on the right path. As I am working on my business and rethinking how I will proceed, this book fell into my lap at the right time.

Starting a Business QuickStart Guide is 250 pages long. These pages span five major parts and seventeen different chapters. The major sections are:

  • Thinking like an entrepreneur
  • Getting started
  • Your value proposition
  • Your business model
  • Writing your business plan

Colwell brings a lot of experience in writing this book. His bio indicates that he is currently a dean of the School of Business at Central Connecticut State University. Starting a Business QuickStart Guide has familiar elements and layouts that I have seen in academic books. He has taken care to clearly explain his terms and write in an easy-to-read manner. I definitely felt as though he wanted me to succeed personally as I read the book.

Throughout the book, Colwell included quotes, examples, cautions, his notes and opinions, and chapter recaps. He used each of these elements to bring attention to key points of the book. I thought they were used with great effect.

Colwell systematically laid out the book. Each chapter built upon the previous. The chapters guided the reader through the essential information to in the end write a business plan. Colwell explained why a business plan is needed even if you are not asking for money. Each chapter helped to set the reader up for success if the strategies and guidance were followed.

As I noted this book came at the right time for me. Actually, I wish I had read Starting a Business QuickStart Guide three years ago. It would have helped me get on the right path quicker. Now that I am done reading it, I will work through the exercises to improve my business plan. If you are a small business owner, I believe you will find value in Starting a Business QuickStart Guide.
