This week’s episode continues the deep dive into Universal Design for Learning, also known as UDL. Universal Design for Learning is a framework for improving the way you provide instruction as well as assess students. As I have come to understand UDL, it is about increasing support and choice within the course. Technology plays a prominent role in doing this. In this episode, we are going to focus on the Strategic Network or the How of learning. These are multiple means of action and expression.

When we talk about multiple means of action and expression, we are focusing on how individuals can demonstrate what they know. Part of action and expression also focuses on an individual’s ability to navigate a learning environment.

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. If we as educators only provide one way to have a student demonstrate knowledge or ability, then we may be limiting some students.

The principle of multiple means for action and expression has three guidelines:

  • Physical Action – being able to use the tools provided
  • Expression and Communication – compose and share ideas using tools that help attain learning goals
  • Executive functions – develop and act on plans to make the most out of learning
