Book Review: How To LinkedIn, The Science of Maximizing Your Personal Brand
(Last Updated On: )

Ron Nash put together a book called How To LinkedIn, The Science of Maximizing Your Personal Brand. It is not an earth-shaking book by any means; however, it still has a place. Because LinkedIn consistently changes, Ron Nash was wise to not go into the nuts and bolts of how to use LinkedIn but instead focused on why it’s important to do LinkedIn.

Nash’s discussion about LinkedIn focused more on brand awareness. Each person is responsible for maintaining their brand. Part of that responsibility is marketing their brand. This is where LinkedIn comes into play. As Nash noted, LinkedIn is about business. It is where business people network. It is where you can set up your brand.

In today’s world, we are trying to do business with people. People do business with other people they know, like, and trust. By having a LinkedIn account, you can help people get to know you and eventually trust you.

Nash talked about who should have LinkedIn accounts. He cut across many different groups of people. One of the groups that grabbed my attention was students and new graduates. I encourage students to create LinkedIn accounts.

Nash also discussed why one should have a LinkedIn account and why it’s important to develop your profile in depth. This is something that I also stress. Your profile should not just have a description of who you are but it should describe what you can do for other people. You need to look at it from a potential client’s point of view. In other words, what’s in it for me. Additionally, part of your profile should include transmedia such as videos, presentations, and imagery. It should be something that helps to magnify what you are able to do.

Throughout the book, Nash focused extensively on the personal brand. He showed how to mold a profile to enhance your personal brand. He shared a number of tips to help create the best profile possible. Some of these tips I’ve already implemented, others I am working on implementing.

He also talked about six steps for building a powerful brand. These steps include:

  • Joining and participating in groups
  • Commenting on posts
  • Sharing worthwhile information
  • Using imagery in your branding
  • Be giving
  • Making friends first

As I noted earlier, How To LinkedIn does not focus on the nuts and bolts of LinkedIn but more on a holistic approach to using LinkedIn. It is a short book of 78 pages but it had information that I  not only found useful but reminded me of important things to do with LinkedIn.
