If you have been reading my book reviews, you already know that I have been reading about the various men who served in Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. They are better known as the Band of Brothers. Each book shares new insights into their lives and the conditions in which they fought. The book, We Who Are Alive and Remain: Untold Stories from the Band of Brothers, written by Marcus Brotherton, takes a look at a new set of members of Easy Company. These are men who were not emphasized in other books.
This book highlights the stories of 32 men over 294 pages. Each chapter recounts a different phase of their time with Easy Company. It also discusses their lives before and after the war.
Each chapter is a collection of short anecdotes from each man on the specific topic. The pieces shared vary from a single sentence to a few paragraphs or pages. It appears that Brotherton had interviewed each man and walked them through a series of questions focusing on the main milestones of the war. He then organized these interviews around each milestone.
I found this book fascinating as I learned more and more about each man. They came from diverse backgrounds. Because I lived in or near some of the places they were from, I could picture the places they described. This made it more real to me.
Each man had a different reason for wanting to join the paratroopers. In most cases, they wanted a challenge and to serve with the best.
Even though the other books discussed the hardships of serving, this book seemed to make it more personal. I believe the men shared openly about their experiences. Throughout the book, I also learned many new things about their experiences that I had not heard before.
If you want to know more about the men of Easy Company, We Who Are Alive and Remain should definitely be on your list to read. I find it amazing the hardship an individual will endure. I often wonder if I would respond the same way.
