Traveling by Train – Part 1

Bernadette just finished dropping me off at Fort Morgan as I begin my journey across the country by train. The California Zephyr is not expected to arrive for another two and a half hours. When I arrived, there was one other person waiting for the train and he had been here already for 5 hours.

The waiting room is cavernous, and the only central air is provided by open windows on all sides of the building. Definitely Spartan conditions. Since I had done some research before arriving, I was not surprised nor disappointed.

This trip is already different in that I struck up a conversation right away with the other passenger. This is something I do not regularly do when traveling by air.

Traveling by train in the US has been on my list of things to do for some time. I have been fascinated by history especially the early 20th Century. At one time, the railroad was a primary mode of transportation, I simply wanted to have this experience. I am heading back home to attend my 35th class reunion and thought that this would be a great way to relax, read, and write as I head to Tunkhannock and back.

My trip will consist of two legs: Fort Morgan, Colorado to Chicago, and Chicago to Rochester, New York. The first leg will take 17 hours and the second will take 11 hours with a 6-hour layover in Chicago.

I am curious how this adventure will pan out, I will keep you informed. Part 2.
