Book Review: Book Marketing Secrets

Book Review: Book Marketing Secrets

Book Marketing SecretsLast week, Derek Doepler hosted a presentation featuring Paul Brodie, who imparted his knowledge on book marketing secrets. I found it to be a fascinating presentation. I was really intrigued by the details about his book launch schedule. I wanted to know more, so I bought Brodie’s book, Book Marketing Secrets.

Discovering the Strategy

Book Marketing Secrets is a rather thin book. It weighs in at 88 pages, and each of the 14 chapters is extremely short. Brodie practices what he preaches. The very first section is a free book offer. He is working to build his email list, a key tactic that he discusses in his book. The free book link takes you to his website, where you can find other resources. His website alone presents useful strategies to emulate.

Building a Launch Foundation

The book is basically a great supplement to the webinar. A lot of the same information was covered. The focus is on using a book to generate business. Your book can serve as a lead magnet to get people onto your email list. Once you have them on your list, you can talk with them. In addition to promoting other books and services, I ask subscribers for their input to help me improve my products as beta readers and advanced copy readers.

Brodie also discussed successfully launching a book. He provided a lot of detail about his book launch campaign, specifically, the first couple of weeks. These details piqued my interest, which is what prompted me to purchase the book. I plan to use his Kindle strategy for my next book launch.

Refining My Systems

Even though I sat down and read it in one night, I took many notes and flagged sections I thought were key. I now need to weave these new lessons into my systems.

Here are some things that I will be reviewing and updating:

  • Book description copy. Am I leading with a problem to be solved?
  • Creating more lead magnets. Continue to build my email list.
  • Engaging with the email list. Am I emailing the list at the right frequency with the right content?
  • Book launch plan. Update my plan based on this new information.
  • Book promo companies. Use these companies more deliberately with my launch plan

Expanding the Marketing Reach

There were other chapters focusing on increasing reach that grabbed my attention. While Brodie tries to get his clients on podcasts, I will be pursuing Association for Talent Development chapter presentation opportunities. He also emphasized submitting press releases. I have done a couple in the past. I plan to submit them for all my future books. Finally, he provided some guidance for conducting a second edition launch. I will give these ideas more consideration as I move forward.

Final Recommendation

There were several useful tips throughout the book. I just need to extract the tips and make adjustments to my systems. The strength of this book is when you see the guidance put into practice. Brodie practices what he preaches. Now, I will be testing what I learned. Because of the interconnectedness to his webinar, his website, and other strategies, I am recommending the book to others. Book Marketing Secrets could benefit from more specific details, but as a roadmap, it works.
