One of the things I looked forward to each year was the release of Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Reading Challenge. It has challenged me to read outside my comfort zone since I discovered it. Sadly, she discontinued it.
I have decided to put together my reading challenge. I would like you to join me.
My ventures into reading challenges began in 2016 when I first discovered Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Reading Challenge.
Her challenges were quite straightforward. She provided twelve different categories. Each category encouraged one to read something outside of normal reading habits.
There was no set order for completing the reading challenge. I picked up new books to read as they suited my interests. These posts will show how successful I was and what I was reading.
I struggled with reading during the COVID crisis, as did many others. I am now ready to take up the challenge again.

Why Should You Take Up a Reading Challenge?
Reading challenges this amazing way to dive deeper into the world of books and spice up your reading routine. Here are some reasons for participating in a reading challenge.
Set Your Own Reading Goals
Imagine setting a goal for how many books you want to read in a year. It’s like a personal mission, whether it’s 10, 20, or even 50 books – whatever feels right for you.
I am asking you to read only 12 books this year, but you can certainly and perhaps are reading more. Normally, I set a reading goal in GoodReads. However, I have failed to meet my quota due to life getting in the way.
Explore Different Genres
Reading challenges are all about variety. This is why I started participating in Modern Mrs. Darcey’s Reading Challenge. You get to explore various genres – maybe some fantasy, a little non-fiction, a dash of historical fiction. It’s like a literary buffet, and you’re invited to try a bit of everything.
This challenge encourages you to explore many book topics that will stretch you as a reader.
Join a Community of Readers
One of the best parts? You’re not alone! You can share your reads, exchange recommendations, and chat about books. I am always looking for great reads.
Grow and Learn
These challenges aren’t just about how many books you can read; they’re about stretching your mind. You might find yourself picking up books you wouldn’t usually consider, and that’s where the magic happens – new perspectives, new stories, new knowledge.
Track Your Journey

Tracking what you read is part of the fun and super satisfying, whether it’s a classic journal, a handy spreadsheet, or a cool app. I have created a sheet you can download to help you keep track of your reading.
Fun and Creative Prompts
Some challenges come with prompts or themes, like “read a book set in a place you’ve never been” or “a book from the year you were born.” I have found that these themes help to take you down reading paths that you have never been down before. It adds a little extra zing to your reading selection. I hope I have put together a fun challenge for you. Let’s check it out.

This looks like a pretty busy challenge. You are probably wondering how to fit it all in. Keep reading, I have some thoughts.
Making Time to Read
When people think of a reading challenge, they think it will be a lot of work. I see it as fun. One of the challenges is finding time in a hectic schedule. Are you thinking the same thing? You’re not alone. Many professionals and executives face the same issue, but there are practical ways to prioritize reading. Here’s how:
Schedule Reading Time
Just like any important task, reading deserves a spot on your calendar. Block out specific times to immerse yourself in books. President Theodore Roosevelt scheduled up to four and a half hours of reading daily. A CEO tackled 100 books in a year by using a Google Calendar to block his schedule for reading. You can do it too!
Integrate Reading Into Daily Routines
Link your reading habit to existing routines. For instance, read before or after meals or start your day with a book. This helps in seamlessly integrating reading into your life.
Seize Every Opportunity
There are countless moments throughout the day for a quick read. Waiting for an appointment, during commercials, or even while commuting. Audiobooks can be a great companion during exercises or while driving.
Family Reading Hours
Get the whole family involved! Dedicate an hour daily for everyone to dive into their books. It’s a great way to spend quality time together.
Reading Retreats and E-Devices
Consider a weekly reading day or a personal reading retreat for those who find daily reading challenging. Use e-readers or tablets for easy access to books and use text-to-speech features for multitasking.
Cut Down Time Wasters
Identify and reduce activities that waste your valuable time, like excessive TV watching or aimless internet browsing. Instead, use that time to engage with a good book.
I am confident you can find the time if you want to. Remember, it’s all about making conscious choices and prioritizing reading.
Keeping Tabs on Your Reading Journey
Ever feel like you’re reading a lot but not quite sure what you’re gaining from it? Tracking your reading can be a game-changer! It’s not just about ticking off titles; it’s about enhancing your reading experience. Here’s how you can do it in a fun and easy way:
Set Your Reading Goals
Decide what you want to achieve with your reading. Is it the number of books, certain genres, or a mix? Setting clear goals can be incredibly motivating.
Log Your Reads
Keep a record of your reading adventures. This could be through daily page counts, time spent reading, or simply noting down when you finish a book. Use the tracking sheet I have provided to monitor your progress in this reading challenge.
Get Creative With Tracking
I love jotting down a quick review on my blog for each book I finish. It’s a great way to reflect and share my thoughts. Plus, I use Goodreads to keep a list of books I’ve read, am reading, or plan to read. It’s like having my own virtual bookshelf!
Quality Over Quantity
Remember, the goal is not just to plow through books. Focus on your learning and how it contributes to your personal growth. Savor each book and let its essence truly sink in.
So, grab a book, start tracking, and watch your reading list grow along with your insights and enjoyment.
Let’s Read Together
So, why not give a reading challenge a try? It’s a fantastic way to discover new books, connect with fellow readers, and see the world through different eyes, one page at a time. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just getting started, there’s something in it for everyone. Let’s turn the page to this exciting adventure together!
