How to Market a Book by Joanna Penn is a comprehensive guide to book marketing for authors. Penn, a successful self-published author, shares her experiences and insights on effectively promoting a book and reaching a wider audience.
I am a huge fan of Joanna Penn and her work. She puts out a wonderful podcast called The Creative Penn. I look forward to every episode. It only stands to reason that I would seek out her books. How to Market a Book is the first non-fiction book I have read from her. It is a reflection of her podcast.
How to Market a Book is 303 pages long. It has 46 chapters arranged in five parts:
- Part 1: Marketing Principles
- Part 2: Your Book Fundamentals
- Part 3: No Platform Needed: Short-term Marketing
- Part 4: Your Author Platform
- Part 5: Marketing Strategy and Book Launches
One of the strengths of this book is its practicality. Penn provides a wide range of marketing strategies and tactics but focuses most of the book on building an effective author platform. She places a strong emphasis on email marketing and a multitude of other strategies for adding value as it relates to your book. She also includes useful tips on creating a marketing mindset, setting goals, and making sure your book is set up for success.
I am dusting off my email list to work on creating better relations because of her recommendations. Sign up for my newsletter if you are interested in what I am doing.
Another highlight of the book is its focus on the long-term. Penn emphasizes the importance of building a platform and a brand as an author, and she offers advice on how to cultivate a loyal reader base and keep them engaged over time.
Overall, How to Market a Book is an essential resource for authors looking to increase the visibility and sales of their books. It’s well-written and full of valuable information, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to take their book marketing to the next level.
