Properly designed rubrics can help improve student performance. They can be used at every stage of an assignment. They can be used for self-assessment, peer assessment, and instructor assessment.

Rubrics help to add grading consistency to assignments that can be difficult to grade. Adding a grading structure makes grading assignments easier and faster. Completed rubrics provide immediate feedback to students that is meaningful.

Used as a formative tool, rubrics can point out areas for improvement as students develop course products. A well-designed rubric clarifies assignment requirements.
