I had an opportunity to hear Dr. Maria Andersen present at the 2020 SUNY Online Summit. She gave a presentation entitled Facing the Future of Technology and Learning. The focus of the presentation was on changing instruction and the bloat of information in the curriculum. As a way to combat this bloat, she introduced a concept she calls ESIL Lens. I had to learn more.

It is impossible for students to learn everything about your discipline. The ESIL Lens will help you determine what is essential and relevant.
Dr. Maria Andersen’s ESIL Lens is a useful tool for identifying what should be covered in a course or program. The ESIL Lens has four levels:
- Existence
- Supported
- Independent
- Lifetime
The ESIL Lens helps to determine what you should share to increase student awareness of what is essential to know and do in a specific discipline.
In this episode, I review the ESIL Lens by specifically addressing each level.
