Over the past few years, I have been becoming luckier and luckier. My luck has not only improved in my personal life but also on the job. It seems that I am running into good luck opportunities everywhere I go. Are you curious about how I am generating this good luck? Well, let me tell you.
In my new book, Read to Succeed: The Power of Books to Transform Your Life and Put You on the Path to Success, I share my secret,
I believe that people can increase their “luck” by developing a reading habit through a regular and sustained practice of reading books, you can become an expert on a topic by taking advantage of the coaching shared through books. Some of the most successful business leaders, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Mark Cuban, and Elon Musk, set aside time to read as a way to generate new ideas. These ideas have contributed significantly to their success. (Skrabut, 2018, p. 5
As I started to read more, especially nonfiction, I started to discover more opportunities. Some of the things I learned through reading helped me discover efficiencies and new strategies for my job and my business. For example, by reading how successful business leaders were structuring their businesses, I applied similar strategies at work. Some of these strategies included the documenting processes, using project management techniques to keep projects on track, and copywriting. Because of what I have learned, we have increased the speed at which we complete tasks. We are having fewer interactions fall through the cracks. We have also increased the number of people participating in our programs. These were certainly problems early on.
Reading has opened other good luck opportunities. As I mentioned, I had just published a new book. I do not think this would have happened if I did not spend some time reading how to pull it off. Now that I have one book under my belt, I am working on another. Because of what I have learned while reading, the process is moving a lot quicker.
Because of what I have been reading lately, Atomic Habits, Deep Work, and The Compound Effect, my luck has improved. Right now, through sheer luck, I am learning to play the guitar as well as trimming off some excess weight. These books have helped me shape my mindset to accomplish some challenging goals.
If you want to increase your luck, I would encourage you to surround yourself with some great books. Take time to read them and put the advice into action. You will also find yourself becoming luckier.
