Book Review: Juggling Elephants: An Easier Way to Get Your Most Important Things Done--Now!
(Last Updated On: January 4, 2020)

I picked up Juggling Elephants: An Easier Way to Get Your Most Important Things Done–Now! at an Association for Talent Development conference a couple of years ago. As luck would have it, I never got around to reading it. Other book purchases seemed to keep pushing these once needed to read books down my list. This year, I have made it a goal to clear off my to-read shelf. As a result, Jones Loflin and Todd Musig’s book, Juggling Elephants made it to the top of my February list. Juggling Elephants is a fictional story that shares a lesson about setting priorities. It is written in the same style as “The One Minute” series that Ken Blanchard has written. If you like these types of books, you will like this book.

Juggling Elephants is 131 pages long and is quite a quick read. The book spans 15 chapters.

Loflin and Musig’s story focused on a man who was struggling to balance his professional, personal, and relational life. The man learned valuable lessons from some circus ringmasters that he, in turn, passed down to his daughter.

The authors used an allegory of a circus as a vehicle to share their lessons about balancing life activities. I thought it was a clever story and useful lessons.

Throughout the book, the authors listed summaries of key points. They also included pages that had specific callouts emphasizing a notable point.

While I enjoyed the story and did make a few notes in my copy of Juggling Elephants, I feel the topic was superficially addressed. This is the same feeling that I get from similar types of books. It may be a format that others find beneficial, however, it is not a format that works for me. Nonetheless, I appreciate the effort that goes into writing this type of story.
