#SMMW18: From Fans to Friends: How to Create a Loyal Community to Facebook Live
(Last Updated On: )

Lou Mongello from the Walt Disney World Radio Show gave a highly entertaining presentation on creating a loyal community using Facebook Live. According to him, he has never spent money on ads, yet he has grown a massive audience.

According to Mongello, we are in the relationship business. He said we could build a community by pursuing our passions and introducing others to our passion. We need to start with one person at a time. We need to engage with each person while continuing to invite others. In turn, we need to introduce everyone to each other. In other words, we need to be good hosts.

How to Create Community

Mongello offered tips for creating a community:

  • Make people part of the experience
  • Bring them value
  • Entertain
  • Nurture and care
  • Appreciate them

“The size of your audience doesn’t matter. What’s important is that your audience is listening.” ~ Randy Pausch, Carnegie Mellon Commencement Speech, 2008

Facebook Live

Mongello uses Ecamm and LiveLeap to run his Facebook Live sessions. I am using Wirecast.

10 Ways to Create Community With Facebook Live

  • Q&A – Create opportunities when you will answer anything.
  • Behind the Scenes – Give a behind the scenes look at your operations.
  • Product Launch – This is a great way to provide community first opportunities for new products.
  • News – Share breaking news or regular newscasts.
  • Call-in Show – Have a call-in show. Your guests will then share it with their friends.
  • Contests – Hold contests and make an event out of it.
  • Take your audience with you – Go live on a location and bring your audience with you on a tour.
  • Share your live events
  • How-tos – Are you demonstrating something? If so, share it with the world.
  • Humanize your brand – Be transparent. Show the good and the bad.

Mongello stressed to not build on rented land. Ensure that you have your own website and email lists.

Most importantly, treat your fans as friends!

What was great about listening to Lou Mongello talk was his passion. He is truly a fan of WDW and it comes out in everything has created. He is an ambassador of his passion. This was a great example of how to build a community.
