Book Review: Alfred Hitchcock’s Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at the library. I spent a lot of time reading. One of my favorite genres was young adult mysteries. Occasionally, I would get a book as a gift or I was able to purchase on while at the mall. One of my absolute favorite books was Alfred Hitchcock’s Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries. I recently remembered this book and thought it would be fun to see what drew me to it.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries was published in 1963. The book contains five short mysteries and spans 206 pages. Each mystery varies in length from 30-50 pages.

Each story begins with an introduction from Alfred Hitchcock. He lets you know that you will read a story that is full of clues. It is your job to solve the mystery.

He is right, each story is full of clues, but the mysteries are quite challenging. Even though I had read each mystery about 45 years ago, I still found them to be difficult.

Midway through each story, Hitchcock highlights some clues that you should have seen. Before the end, he reappears to announce that all clues are available and that you should be able to solve the mystery. He also remarks that you shouldn’t feel bad if you can’t. Before Hitchcock explains the solution, the story’s detective will identify the culprit.

I think this is a wonderful book for young adults who like mysteries. Rereading Alfred Hitchcock’s Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries brought back some enjoyable memories.
