Book Review: Flipped Learning for Social Studies Instruction
(Last Updated On: )

Let me begin by saying that I am a fan of what Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams have achieved with Flipped Learning. However, I am rather underwhelmed with their book, Flipped Learning for Social Studies Instruction. While it was a good book, it could have been a great book. Let me explain.

This book is much smaller than Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day. This book is 5 by 6.9 inches and is only 105 pages. I was able to complete it in one sitting. The book has 10 chapters. Here is a table of contents:

  • Why You Should Flip Your Class
  • Flipped Class 101
  • Planning for the Flipped Classroom
  • Traditional Resources and Choice in Flipped Learning
  • Rethinking Class Time
  • Flipped with Interactive Social Studies Simulations
  • Mastery Learning in the Flipped Classroom
  • Inquiry and Flipped Learning
  • Projects
  • Conclusion

I will not argue with the quality of the content provided. Bergmann and Sams provide solid material regarding flipped learning. It is a condensed version of Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day. I believe that the authors could have expanded upon the ideas and resources they included on how to flip a social studies classroom. The examples provided were great… there could have been much more.

If the other books in this series are similar, I will not be investing in more. I now have two books focusing on flipped learning, I will hunt out other sources to find ideas.

If I were a social studies teacher and wanted to learn more about flipped instruction for social studies, would I buy Flipped Learning for Social Studies Instruction? I would, if for no other reason than to light a fire about flipped learning. It is a good starter book.
