#SMMW17: How to Scale Your Consulting Practice Without Increasing Overhead

I was looking forward to hearing John Jantsch speak because of his book The Referral Engine. I was not disappointed. This Social Media Marketing World presentation focused on creating a business system that could scale while maintaining quality.

Jantsch’s message was quite clear. You cannot create a business that is unique to every customer. Instead, you must develop a system that has processes and repeatable tasks. You must create a system that will adapt to a change in volume while being flexible to handle different customer needs.

He focused on seven key elements:

  1. Create a unique point of view
  2. Develop a repeatable product or process
  3. Create a consistent mythology
  4. Build a lead generation flow
  5. Convert paid leads
  6. Partner with others
  7. Document your processes

I have been working with a company on exactly these tasks. Before you can improve a system, you must first understand it. Documenting and visualizing your system and processes is a great first step.

By taking time to document your systems, you begin to understand what you have and where you can make adjustments. A documented system also helps to distribute the workload because others can follow the script.

One of the systems you must consider is your marketing and social media processes. Jantsch recommends planning your communications and using an editorial calendar.

If you are beginning to document your systems, as a business owner, you want to look at tasks you hate doing, tasks you can’t do, and tasks you shouldn?t do.

If you are interested in taking a look at your systems and getting them documented, please contact me. You will be amazed at what you will learn from the process.
