Book Review: What a Character!: Florida Writers Association Collection, Volume 9

A couple of months ago, I came home to find a package. Based on the look and feel of the package, I knew it was a book. But I couldn’t remember buying one. Upon opening the package, I was pleasantly surprised. My friend, Bruce Smith, sent me What a Character!, a collection of essays from the Florida Writers Association. This collection of essays also contained one that he had written. I immediately put it on my March 2018 reading list. It had an added benefit of serving as one of the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenges.

What a Character! Is a wonderful collection of essays. There were 61 adult and 12 young adult essays in this collection which spanned 225 pages. Each essay was only 3-4 pages long.

The essays focused on a character or a person’s character, thus explaining the title of the book. The stories varied with the author. Essays spanned genres from science fiction to mysteries. Some of the essays were personal stories whereas others were truly fictional. I found each one entertaining, some grabbed me emotionally.

The first ten stories were those chosen by the featured author EJ Wenstrom, author of the Chronicles of the Third Realm War series.

The last portion of What a Character! featured young adult writers. They were winners of their age group brackets. I was quite impressed with their creativity. I wish I possessed that type of talent.
