Book Review: Managing the Front-End of Training: 101 Ways to Analyze Training Needs - and Get Results

Managing the Front-End of Training: 101 Ways to Analyze Training Needs – and Get Results by Bob Pike and Christopher Busse was a quick fifth book for my July reading list. While I can squeeze ideas from almost everything I read to include this book, I felt this book was just a get rich effort based on Bob Pike’s name. I think it is overpriced for its value. Fortunately, I picked my version up at a library sale.

The book measures 4” x 7.5” and has 128 pages. As stated on the cover, there are 101 ways to manage front-end training needs. Fourteen pages are dedicated to the table of contents, foreword, introduction, lists of techniques, and about the author page. The rest of the pages focus on the methods.

The techniques are typically one to three paragraphs long. My impression is that the methods are mined from a survey. The editors do give adequate credit to the contributors. A couple of the techniques were duplicated in the book. For example, method 90 was the same as 82, and technique 83 was the same as 10.

As I noted, I was able to identify some strategies that I could use in my training programs. However, today, others would give this book away as an ebook.
