Book Review: Frankenstein
(Last Updated On: January 4, 2020)

When I think about Frankenstein, I think about a castle with a lot of lightning and body parts being cobbled together to create the monster. However, in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this was only a small part of the book. Shelley’s Frankenstein was a story within a story within a story. While I thought it was a little confusing and slow in the beginning, I was fully entranced by the end of the book.

Frankenstein is 205 pages long and broken into three major parts with seven to nine chapters in each part.

The book begins with a letter from Robert Walton who is on a journey to find himself. In turn, he finds a man who is near death. This man is Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein is chasing a creature of his own creation in an attempt to destroy it.

Frankenstein relates his tale to Walton. Part of his tale is a discussion that Frankenstein had with the creature. The creature was just trying to belong but was repulsed by all of mankind. The creature became incensed in its treatment and sought revenge for its creation.

This story is now 200 years old and it began as a challenge. Mary, her husband (Percy Shelley), and Lord Byron had a competition to see who could write the best horror story. Mary had won the competition.

Frankenstein is not necessarily an easy read. As with other books of this period, the language is more complex. Nonetheless, it was worth reading. As I noted earlier, the book does not mirror my memories of Frankenstein movie with Boris Karloff where the creation of the creature was more prominent.

It is one of those books that I should have read a long time ago. I picked it up because the book was celebrating its 200 year anniversary and it fit a category on the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge. It is a classic I have been meaning to read. If you have never read Frankenstein but you think you know Frankenstein, I would recommend that you read it. It was a fascinating tale.
